The Mission of Rockford’s 1834 Alliance of Transformational Dreamers and Doers

In 1834, on the banks of the Rock River, three visionary pioneers began transforming the forested valley that would grow into Rockford, Illinois: Germanicus Kent, a lawyer; Thatcher Blake, a builder; and Lewis Lemon, an African-American laborer who earned his freedom five years later.
Our three founders embodied the ingenuity, resilience and collaborative spirit that still defines Rockford at its best. The 1834 Alliance of Transformational Dreamers & Doers draws inspiration from Kent, Blake and Lemon, honoring their courage to dream boldly and act decisively in pursuit of an inspired, empowered future.
The 1834 Alliance celebrates the transformative achievements of remarkable modern-day Rockfordians, businesses and organizations who carry forward the Founders’ enduring legacy. Today’s visionaries are the architects of a thriving culture of innovation, collaboration and pride.
By annually sharing their stories of exceptional achievement, we seek to inspire new partnerships and initiatives that shape a future of boundless opportunity in which strategic leadership and committed action drive progress for generations to come. Such projects will be honored at an annual celebration by our 1834 Transformers Honor. We will also celebrate an in-progress collaborative project with outstanding potential. Such projects will receive the 1834 Ignitors Honor.
Through our celebrations, workshops and other events, we will create opportunities for change-makers to exchange ideas and form enduring partnerships. Such gatherings seek to spark dynamic relationships that shape the future of our community and beyond.
The Transformative Power of Collaboration—Across the Rockford Region, collaboration is becoming known as our community’s superpower. Whether business leaders, civic leaders or cultural leaders Rockford makes progress when people work together, share tables and “pull together” shape the city’s next future.

We are committed to broadly sharing the good news of Rockford’s extraordinary stories through many platforms, elevating our city’s reputation as a hub of innovation, creativity and progress.
Above all, the 1834 Alliance is rooted in community engagement. We listen and learn. We welcome public participation to ensure that our work reflects the ambitions and experiences of Rockford’s modern innovators. By honoring and celebrating the past, we hope to spark new dreams, forge lasting partnerships and drive transformative change.
Innovation thrives when people unite with purpose. The 1834 Alliance amplifies innovation, inspiring others to dream boldly, collaborate deeply and act decisively. By connecting and inspiring individuals and organizations, we will fuel Rockford’s growth and accelerate access to healthier living conditions, outstanding schools and an increasingly vibrant economy. We believe Rockford’s potential is limitless.
