Embassy Suites by Hilton Rockford Riverfront
From Endangered Landmark to Riverfront Gateway
For years, the silent building loomed over the river – a daily reminder not just of its industrial past, but of what Rockford might lose if belief and patience ran out The transformation of the former industrial Amerock headquarters into the Embassy Suites by Hilton Rockford Riverfront did not begin with a developer or a hotel flag. It began years earlier with a small group of local citizens who believed that downtown Rockford’s future required protecting its past.
As the massive riverfront complex sat vacant and increasingly threatened by demolition, a nonprofit group called Friends of Ziock formed to preserve the building and advocate for its reuse. Led by architect and preservationist Gary Anderson, Don Bissel, Marge & Kyle Bevers and other advocates and civic leaders, the group invested their own time, resources and credibility to stabilize the structure and invite outside developers to imagine a future for the site rather than its demolition.
That persistence ultimately paid off when Gorman & Company, led by developer Gary Gorman, recognized the long-term potential of the building and the downtown riverfront it anchors. The result was one of the most consequential private-sector investments in Rockford’s modern downtown revival.
What.
Completed in 2020 and aided in large part by the commitment of Mayor Lawrence J. Morrisey and his administration and Rockford City Council, the redevelopment converted the former Amerock headquarters into a 160-room, all-suite riverfront hotel featuring dining, meeting and event space, and direct connections to downtown attractions. More than an adaptive reuse, the project restored confidence in downtown Rockford as a destination supporting conventions, tournaments, business travel and multi-day events that had previously bypassed the city’s core.
Just as importantly, the project demonstrated the power of patient, local stewardship paired with outside capital. Without the early advocacy, preservation work, and belief-driven effort of Friends of Ziock, the redevelopment opportunity would likely never have existed.
The Embassy Suites by Hilton Rockford Riverfront was fueled by the passion of committed private citizens who refused to accept the wrecking ball as the ultimate fate of a legacy downtown building.
